OBA
Client: Studio
Year: 2016
Field: Medical Equipment
· What?
OBA! is a playful and safe redesign of traditional IV (infusion) pouches — transforming an object often associated with fear into one that reassures and comforts, especially for children.
Blood, nutritional, and medication bags are essential tools in hospitals. However, their appearance and design — mainly optimized for adult use and mass production — can be intimidating for young patients.
· How?
Developed by the Paramedical Division of Studio De Lussac in collaboration with nurses and medical staff from Hôpital Saint-Anne (Paris), OBA! reimagines the infusion bag as a smiling pictogram character.
This friendly design helps healthcare professionals turn a stressful procedure into a lighter, more poetic experience. The infusion becomes a “magical potion” delivered by a caring character rather than a frightening medical device.
Beyond aesthetics, safety is a major focus:
-
The character’s nose (a round label) indicates the blood type, complementing the mandatory front label for double visibility.
-
The round shape of OBA! bags, reserved for children, helps avoid confusion with adult pouches — preventing dangerous dosage errors.
· Why?
OBA! exemplifies how design can humanize the hospital environment and enhance pediatric care.
This collaboration between designers and medical staff demonstrates the potential of thoughtful design to improve safety, emotional comfort, and overall patient well-being.
